How to Sow

  • Firm down soil by shuffling your feet over the top of the bed (cabbage roots like firm soil)
  • Form drills in the soil about half an inch / 2cm deep and about 6 inches apart
  • Thin out the seedlings once they emerge so they are spaced roughly 18 inches apart

Plant Care

  • Transplant only once young plants have 6 or 7 true leaves.
  • For Summer cabbage: transplant in May/June; Winter cabbages: transplant in June/July; Spring cabbages: transplant in September/October
  • Creat a hole in the soil, and fill it with water several times before placing the plan
  • Place the plant so that the lowest leaves are at ground level

AllotMe’s Tips

  • To protect from pests, cover cabbages in netting during the summer months (or build a brassica cage!)
  • Keep well watered during harvest season to avoid the cabbage head splitting and going 'to seed'
