Sow Seeds Indoors

Sow seeds on the surface of compost indoors from March to April. Needs light and warmth (15-20°C) to germinate.

Outdoors

Plant out from May onwards. Prefers a sunny spot with poor to average, well-drained soil. Very hardy once established.

Harvest

Snip sprigs from late spring through autumn. Flavour is strongest just before the plant flowers in midsummer.

How to Sow

  • Sow seeds on the surface of moist compost — they need light to germinate
  • Keep at 15-20°C and mist to keep moist
  • Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle
  • Plant 30cm apart in a sunny, well-drained position
  • Can also be propagated by division in spring or cuttings in summer

Plant Care

  • Water sparingly once established — oregano prefers dry conditions
  • Cut back hard after flowering to encourage fresh, bushy growth
  • Divide clumps every 2-3 years in spring to keep plants vigorous
  • Protect from excessive winter wet rather than cold — good drainage is key
  • Brilliant in containers on a sunny patio

AllotMe’s Tips

  • Greek oregano has the best flavour for cooking — much stronger than the common species
  • Oregano flowers are a magnet for bees and butterflies — let some plants flower for the pollinators
  • Dries beautifully: hang bunches upside down and strip leaves once dry. The flavour actually intensifies when dried
