How to Sow

  • Start by digging trenches approx. 18 inches deep and at least 2 spade-widths
  • Create a mound down the middle of your trench using soil or manure
  • Place each of the asparagus crowns/roots well spaced along the ridge so they are approx. 3 inches below the soil surface
  • Cover with soil / compost and give the area a good watering

Plant Care

  • Water roughly 2 inches worth every other week if there has not been adequate rainfall
  • No asparagus can be harvested in the first year to allow to plant to establish itself
  • Asparagus is helped by watering in a generalised fertiliser in Spring
  • In the Autumn, cut back any yellowing foliage down to soil level

AllotMe’s Tips

  • Asparagus is a perennial plant that can produce a harvest every year for 20 years once mature!
  • You can actually create multiple asparagus plants out of one by simply prising them apart, including the roots (which may need to be cut to seperate). Be sure to plant these seperated sections right away
