Sow Seeds Indoors

Sow seeds on the surface of compost indoors from March to April. Keep at 15°C — they need light and warmth to germinate.

Outdoors

Plant out from late May to June into rich, moisture-retentive soil. Self-blanching varieties are easiest.

Harvest

Harvest self-blanching varieties from August. Trench varieties from October. Lift the whole plant or cut individual stalks from the outside.

How to Sow

  • Sow seeds on the surface — they need light to germinate
  • Keep at 15°C and be patient — germination takes 2-3 weeks
  • Prick out when seedlings have 2-3 true leaves
  • Plant self-blanching varieties in a block (23cm apart each way) so plants shade each other
  • For trench celery, dig a trench 30cm deep and 45cm wide, fill with compost

Plant Care

  • Water copiously — celery is 95% water and any check in growth causes stringy, bitter stalks
  • Feed weekly with a balanced liquid fertiliser
  • For trench varieties, gradually earth up the stems from August to blanch them
  • Mulch around plants to retain moisture
  • Watch for celery leaf miner and slugs

AllotMe’s Tips

  • Self-blanching varieties like 'Victoria' are much easier than traditional trench celery — start there
  • The secret to good celery is simple: never, ever let it dry out. If you can't water regularly, it's not the crop for you
  • Celery leaves are packed with flavour — dry them and use as a seasoning or add fresh to soups and stews
