Sow Seeds Indoors

Sow seeds indoors in January or February on the surface of moist compost. They need light to germinate.

Outdoors

Plant out bare-root runners in March or April, or pot-grown plants from April to September

Harvest

Pick when the fruits are fully red all over, typically from June. Pick every other day during the season.

How to Sow

  • Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with fertile, well-drained soil
  • Space plants 35-40cm apart in rows 75cm apart
  • Plant so the crown sits at soil level — not too deep or too shallow
  • Water well after planting and mulch around plants with straw or bark
  • Remove any flowers in the first year to help plants establish strong roots

Plant Care

  • Water regularly, especially during dry spells and when fruit is forming
  • Tuck straw under the fruits once they start to develop to keep them clean and prevent rot
  • Net plants to protect fruit from birds
  • After fruiting, cut back old leaves to about 10cm above the crown
  • Remove any runners unless you want to propagate new plants

AllotMe’s Tips

  • Strawberries do brilliantly in containers, hanging baskets, and grow bags — perfect if you're short on space
  • Grow several varieties for a harvest from June through to October
  • Replace plants every 3-4 years as yields drop off — use runners from your strongest plants to start fresh
