Sow Seeds Indoors

Sow seeds indoors from March to April, scattering on the surface of moist compost. They need light to germinate.

Outdoors

Plant out from May, or buy established plants year-round. Prefers a sunny, well-drained spot. Very drought-tolerant once established.

Harvest

Pick sprigs year-round once established. Best flavour just before flowering in summer. Never harvest more than a third at once.

How to Sow

  • Sow seeds on the surface of moist compost — do not cover, they need light
  • Keep at 15-20°C and mist regularly
  • Germination takes 14-28 days — be patient
  • Alternatively, buy a plant and take cuttings or divide in spring
  • Plant in poor, well-drained soil in full sun — thyme thrives on neglect

Plant Care

  • Water sparingly — thyme hates wet feet and will rot in waterlogged soil
  • Trim after flowering to keep plants compact and prevent them going woody
  • Protect tender varieties with fleece in harsh winters
  • Replace plants every 3-4 years as they become woody and less productive
  • Excellent for growing in containers, gravel gardens, and between paving stones

AllotMe’s Tips

  • Common thyme and lemon thyme are the two essential varieties for the kitchen — grow both
  • Thyme is one of the best companion plants around — its strong scent confuses cabbage white butterflies and other pests
  • Dry thyme by hanging bunches upside down in a warm place — it keeps its flavour better than most dried herbs
