Sow Seeds Indoors

Sow seeds indoors from March to April, on their sides, 1cm deep, at 20°C. Transplant when roots fill the pot.

Outdoors

Plant out greenhouse varieties from May. Ridge (outdoor) varieties can be planted out from early June after last frost.

Harvest

Harvest when cucumbers are the right size for the variety — usually 15-20cm. Pick regularly to encourage more fruit.

How to Sow

  • Sow seeds on their side to prevent rotting, 1cm deep in small pots
  • Keep at 20°C until germination (usually 7-10 days)
  • For outdoor growing, choose ridge or outdoor varieties
  • Harden off before planting outside in June
  • Enrich the planting area with plenty of compost or well-rotted manure

Plant Care

  • Water consistently — cucumbers are mostly water and need lots of it
  • Feed weekly with a high-potash liquid fertiliser once fruits start to form
  • Train greenhouse varieties up strings or canes, pinching out side shoots after two leaves
  • For outdoor ridge varieties, pinch out the growing tip after six leaves
  • Watch for powdery mildew — ensure good air circulation

AllotMe’s Tips

  • 'Marketmore' is the most reliable outdoor variety for the UK — hardy and resistant to disease
  • Greenhouse cucumbers produce smoother, longer fruits but need more attention
  • If leaves are wilting despite watering, check for slugs at the base — they love young cucumber stems
