Sow Seeds Indoors

Can be sown in trays or modules indoors from February, but direct sowing outdoors is just as easy.

Outdoors

Sow direct outdoors from March to September. Successional sowing every 2-3 weeks gives a constant supply.

Harvest

Pull summer radishes 3-4 weeks after sowing when they're golf-ball sized. Don't leave too long or they go woody and hot.

How to Sow

  • Sow seeds thinly, 1cm deep in drills 15cm apart
  • Thin seedlings to 2.5cm apart when large enough to handle
  • Sow in any spare gaps between slower-growing crops
  • Keep soil moist for even growth
  • Sow winter radish varieties (like 'Black Spanish') in July-August

Plant Care

  • Water regularly and evenly — irregular watering causes splitting
  • Radishes need very little care beyond watering and weeding
  • Provide some shade in midsummer to prevent bolting
  • Thin promptly to avoid overcrowding
  • Harvest promptly — overgrown radishes are woody and unpleasant

AllotMe’s Tips

  • Radishes are the fastest crop you can grow — perfect for impatient gardeners and great for kids
  • Sow radish seeds between rows of slow-growing parsnips or carrots to mark the rows
  • Try the variety 'French Breakfast' for a milder, elongated radish with beautiful colour
