Sow Seeds Indoors

Can be grown from semi-ripe cuttings in summer, but very slow. Buying an established plant is strongly recommended.

Outdoors

Plant container-grown bay trees in spring (April/May) or autumn (September/October). Choose a sheltered spot.

Harvest

Pick individual leaves year-round. Older, darker leaves have the most flavour. Bay leaves can be used fresh or dried.

How to Sow

  • Buy an established container-grown plant — growing from seed takes years
  • Plant in well-drained soil in a sunny, sheltered position
  • Bay does extremely well in large containers — traditional bay standards in pots are a classic
  • Shelter from cold, drying winds which scorch the leaves
  • Add crocks to the bottom of containers for good drainage

Plant Care

  • Water container-grown plants regularly, especially in summer
  • Feed container plants monthly with a balanced liquid fertiliser from spring to autumn
  • Protect from hard frosts — wrap containers with bubble wrap or move to a sheltered spot in winter
  • Trim to shape in summer — bay responds well to clipping
  • Watch for bay sucker (a sap-sucking pest) which causes curled, thickened leaves

AllotMe’s Tips

  • A single bay tree will supply more leaves than you'll ever need — plus it makes a beautiful ornamental
  • Bay leaves are essential in bouquet garni, soups, stews, and slow-cooked dishes — a true kitchen essential
  • Bay trees can live for decades and grow into impressive specimens — one of the best long-term investments for a herb garden
