Sow Seeds Indoors

Sow in modules indoors from March. Don't let seedlings get root-bound or they will bolt.

Outdoors

Sow direct outdoors from April to September. Later sowings (July-September) bolt less than spring ones.

Harvest

Harvest baby leaves from 3-4 weeks, or full heads from 6-8 weeks. Cut at the base and the plant may resprout.

How to Sow

  • Sow seeds 1cm deep in rows 30cm apart
  • Thin seedlings to 20-30cm apart for full-sized heads, or grow closely for baby leaves
  • Choose a position in light shade, especially for summer sowings
  • Sow from mid-July onwards for the best results — pak choi bolts easily in long days
  • Water the drill before sowing

Plant Care

  • Water consistently — pak choi needs steady moisture to grow quickly and stay tender
  • Protect from flea beetle with fine mesh or fleece
  • Slugs love pak choi — use nematodes, beer traps, or copper tape
  • Avoid disturbing roots when transplanting as this triggers bolting
  • Grow under cover in autumn for late-season harvests

AllotMe’s Tips

  • Late-summer sowings (July-August) are much more successful than spring ones because shorter days mean less bolting
  • 'Joi Choi' is a reliable variety that's slower to bolt in the UK climate
  • Brilliant for stir-fries, soups, and steaming — ready in under a minute in a hot wok
