Sow Seeds Indoors

Sow indoors in modules from March to April, one seed per cell.

Outdoors

Sow direct outdoors from April to August. Can also be sown in September under cover for winter harvesting.

Harvest

Pick outer leaves regularly when they're 15-20cm tall, leaving the centre to keep growing. A true cut-and-come-again crop.

How to Sow

  • Sow seeds 2.5cm deep, spacing 10cm apart in rows 40cm apart
  • Thin to 30cm apart when seedlings have 4 true leaves
  • Choose a sunny or partially shaded spot with fertile soil
  • Each 'seed' is actually a cluster and may produce multiple seedlings — thin to the strongest
  • Water the drill well before sowing

Plant Care

  • Water regularly in dry weather for tender, succulent leaves
  • Mulch around plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds
  • Pick outer leaves regularly to encourage continuous production
  • Cover with fleece in autumn to extend the season
  • Feed with a nitrogen-rich fertiliser mid-season for a boost

AllotMe’s Tips

  • 'Bright Lights' produces stunning multicoloured stems in red, orange, yellow, and white — as ornamental as it is productive
  • Swiss chard is incredibly hardy — it will often overwinter in mild areas and regrow in spring
  • The stems and leaves can be cooked separately: stems take a bit longer, treat them like asparagus
