Sow Seeds Indoors

Sow seeds indoors from February to March at 15-20°C. Germination is slow and erratic — buying plants is easier.

Outdoors

Plant out from April to May, or September. Prefers full sun and well-drained, even poor, soil.

Harvest

Cut flower spikes just as the lowest flowers begin to open for drying. Harvest in the morning after the dew has dried.

How to Sow

  • Buy container-grown plants for the quickest results (seed is slow and unreliable)
  • Plant in full sun in well-drained soil — add grit to heavy clay soils
  • Space plants 30-45cm apart depending on variety
  • Don't add compost or manure — lavender thrives in poor, lean soil
  • Water in well but don't overwater once established

Plant Care

  • Trim after flowering to remove spent flower stalks
  • Give a second light trim in spring to maintain a compact shape — never cut into old, bare wood
  • No feeding necessary — rich soil produces lots of leaf but few flowers
  • Excellent drainage is essential — lavender will not tolerate wet feet
  • Replace plants after 5-7 years when they become leggy

AllotMe’s Tips

  • English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is the hardiest and best for UK gardens — varieties like 'Hidcote' and 'Munstead' are classics
  • Lavender is one of the best pollinator plants — bees absolutely love it
  • Dried lavender flowers can be used in baking (lavender shortbread), in lemonade, and for making sachets for drawers and wardrobes
