How to Sow
- Sow seeds 5cm deep, 15cm apart in rows 45cm apart
- For climbing varieties, set up a wigwam or row of canes before sowing
- Dwarf varieties need no support and are great for containers
- Sow successionally every 3-4 weeks for a continuous harvest
- Water the drill well before sowing
Plant Care
- Water regularly once flowers appear — drought causes flowers to drop
- Mulch around plants to conserve moisture
- Climbing varieties need tying in to supports initially
- Pick pods every 2-3 days to keep plants productive
- Watch for slugs on young plants — use beer traps or nematodes

- Dwarf varieties like 'Safari' are perfect for pots on a patio — no supports needed
- French beans freeze brilliantly: blanch for 2 minutes, cool, and bag
- If you miss some pods and they go fat, leave them to dry on the plant and save the seeds for next year
