Sow Seeds Indoors
Sow seeds indoors from April, on their side, 2cm deep. One seed per 8cm pot.
Outdoors
Plant out in late May or early June after the last frost. Or sow direct outdoors in late May under a cloche.
Harvest
Harvest courgette-sized from July for best flavour, or leave to grow into full marrows for storing. Cut with a sharp knife leaving a short stem.

How to Sow
- Sow seeds on their side to prevent rotting, 2cm deep
- Keep at 18-20°C until germination
- Harden off for a week before planting out
- Plant in a sunny, sheltered spot in ground enriched with plenty of compost or manure
- Space plants 90cm apart — they spread widely
Plant Care
- Water generously, especially when fruits are swelling — water at the base, not over the leaves
- Feed every 2 weeks with a high-potash liquid fertiliser once fruits start forming
- Place a tile or piece of wood under developing marrows to prevent rot
- Pollinate by hand in cool weather if bees are scarce — transfer pollen from male to female flowers with a brush
- Watch for powdery mildew and remove affected leaves

- Marrows are just overgrown courgettes! If you've ever left a courgette too long, you've grown a marrow
- Stuffed marrow is a classic British dish — halve, scoop out seeds, fill with mince and veg, and bake
- For giant marrow competitions, allow only one fruit per plant and feed heavily — the classic allotment challenge!
