Sow Seeds Indoors

Sow seeds indoors from February to March at 15-20°C. Pot on when seedlings are large enough to handle.

Outdoors

Plant out from April to May. Or plant offsets (rooted side shoots) in March or April for quicker cropping.

Harvest

Cut the main head when scales are still tightly closed, then side buds will follow. Harvest from June to September in the second year onwards.

How to Sow

  • Sow seeds 1cm deep in small pots at 15-20°C
  • Pot on into larger containers as they grow
  • Harden off and plant out from April in a sunny, sheltered position
  • Space plants 75-90cm apart — they grow very large
  • Enrich the soil with plenty of well-rotted compost before planting

Plant Care

  • Water well in the first season to help plants establish
  • Mulch generously with compost or manure each spring
  • Remove flower heads in the first year to build strong plants (or harvest lightly)
  • In winter, cut back and mulch the crown heavily with straw to protect from frost
  • Divide clumps every 3-4 years to maintain vigour

AllotMe’s Tips

  • Globe artichokes are dramatic, architectural plants — they look stunning at the back of a border even if you don't eat them!
  • 'Green Globe' is the most reliable variety for UK gardens
  • A perennial that crops for 4-5 years once established — great value for the space
