Sow Seeds Indoors

Sow in trays of damp compost from March to April. Keep constantly moist — stand the tray in a dish of water.

Outdoors

Can be grown outdoors from April in a continuously wet spot, or in pots stood in trays of water. Loves shade.

Harvest

Start picking leaves from about 4-6 weeks after sowing. Cut regularly to encourage fresh, tender growth and prevent flowering.

How to Sow

  • Sow seeds on the surface of moist compost — do not cover, they need light
  • Stand the tray or pot in a dish of water to keep constantly wet
  • Alternatively, press stems from supermarket watercress into wet compost — they root easily
  • Choose a shady or partially shaded position
  • Can be grown in a gently flowing stream if you have one!

Plant Care

  • Keep constantly wet — this is the single most important requirement
  • Change standing water regularly to prevent stagnation
  • Pick regularly and cut back before flowering
  • Feed every 2-3 weeks with a dilute liquid fertiliser
  • Replace plants annually as they lose vigour

AllotMe’s Tips

  • The easiest way to start is from a bunch of supermarket watercress — just pop the stems in water and they'll root in days
  • Watercress is one of the most nutrient-dense vegetables you can grow — packed with iron, calcium, and vitamins
  • Brilliant in soups, salads, and sandwiches — watercress soup is a classic British favourite
